Income Generation
One critical challenge that faces children in Busia is a lack of opportunities to apply their education in the community, which often means the cycle of poverty is not broken simply by providing a child with education. For this reason, GHM is committed to teaching our students and their families the skills necessary to provide for themselves and be sustainable. We rotate and try to offer income generating projects like raising poultry on campus first started in February 2016 with 1000 chicks. In 2020 we will go for the second phase of 1000 chicks and apply what we have learned to the teaching on the important aspects of raising them. We are teaching children and their families how to manage this project. GHM will also set aside 5 acres of GHM land and developing a plan to train families on sustainable farming techniques to increase the stability of their food and income streams. One of the current discussions on our future planning is to have a vocation training center for those that are unable to continue with education beyond Primary 7, with possible tuition programs and training of skills that are applicable for thriving so breaking the Poverty Cycle is achievable for students who aspire to gaining skills beyond just an education at the GHM facility.
